From our Founder: Dear Friends,
It has been 4 ½ years since that first pair of socks arrived at my door. Because of your faith, love and trust, that one pair of socks has turned into almost 5,000 pair!
Through the years, I have been recognized and honored by many. My picture has been in the newspaper and on TV. I want you to know that YOU have all been right beside me with your hands on my shoulder, guiding me, and YOU ALL INSPIRE ME.
Many have said that God has called ME to do His work, but I feel that God has called every one of you as well. And YOU have answered that call. I truly and firmly believe that Mychal’s Message could not exist without YOU.
Recently, I had the opportunity to spend 4 days in Washington DC as Pennsylvania’s top high school volunteer in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Out of 20,000 applicants, I was 1 of 104 chosen for this special award. There I met many young people from across the country. I shared my story and listened to others from a South Dakota high school senior, a special young man from Virginia, a teen from New Jersey and a volunteer teen fireman from Puerto Rico. When we shared our stories with one another, I realized that my calling was greater than I had imagined.
I was inspired by the words of Gen. Colin Powell as he gave the keynote address at the State Awards Ceremony when he said, “You make a living from what you get, but you make a life from what you give.” In that powerful statement, Gen. Powell renewed my enthusiasm and made me realize I had to go home and do more.
I am currently working on the “Home Sweet Home” project and ask for your prayers as I attempt to undertake this large task. I will ask local high school students to spend a night sleeping as a homeless person in a cardboard box in my parish church parking lot. Each student will be asked to secure sponsors for the night’s stay, and all money raised will benefit the homeless.
I hope you enjoy reading about the other new projects in this newsletter and can find it in your heart to participate in one that touches you the most. “In God We Trust” is a fun way to celebrate birthdays, and “Prayer Bears” can bring a large smile to the face of a homeless child. “Blessed Bloomers” is always our largest project, because the need is always so great. In “Blessed Bloomers IV” I ask you to continue to remember our homeless friends on the breadline. Already, they have begun asking when we’ll be back with the underwear. They’re counting on us.
Again, I want to say … YOU have all inspired ME. I am grateful for everything that you have done to help make Mychal’s Message what it is. I ask for your prayers so that I can continue helping to meet the needs of the homeless.
Shannon
